What Happens If You Use the Wrong SWIFT Code?
The result depends on whether the bank code is wrong, only the branch code is wrong, or the payment cannot be matched to the beneficiary account.
Wrong branch code
If the bank is correct but the branch identifier is wrong, the payment may reach the bank head office and be redirected. This can add several days to the transfer.
Wrong bank or country code
If the code points to another bank or country, the payment may be rejected, returned or held for manual review. Return fees and currency conversion losses may apply.
How to reduce the risk
Confirm the bank name, country and account number with the recipient. Keep a screenshot or written confirmation before submitting a large transfer.
